Understanding Pain

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACUTE VS. CHRONIC PAIN?

Acute pain is sudden and you can usually pinpoint what caused it, like a car crash or work injury. The pain itself is usually caused by strains, sprains or even muscle spasms and can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. However, acute pain can become chronic if you don’t treat the original injury within 0-3 months.

Chronic pain can develop gradually over time and can get worse if not treated. Pain is considered chronic if you experience it for at least 3 months or intermittently over 6 months. Many conditions can cause chronic pain, even past injuries that have healed, so it’s very important to have board-certified medical providers and chiropractors get to the root of the problem.

Phases of Chiropractic Relief

PHASE 1: RELIEF CARE

IMMEDIATE RELIEF
Relief care done by a chiropractic doctor focuses on acute pain that occurs suddenly as a result of injury or disease. The main goal is to reduce your symptoms by reducing inflammation, relieving pain, and restoring normal range of motion to affected joints.

Most people are under the assumption that if they don’t feel any pain that there is nothing wrong with them – that they are healthy. Unfortunately, pain is a very poor indicator of health. In fact, pain and other symptoms frequently only appear after a disease or other condition has become advanced.

For example, consider a cavity in your tooth. Does it hurt when it first develops or only after it has become serious? How about heart disease? Regardless of whether you are talking about cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stress or problems with the spine, pain is usually the last thing to appear. When you begin chiropractic care, pain is also the first symptom to disappear, even though much of the underlying condition remains.

PHASE 2: CORRECTIVE CARE

TEAMING UP WITH ALL STAR HEALTH
The goal of corrective care, also known as rehabilitative care, is to allow muscles and other tissues to heal to a point that prevents further pain or injury. Focus shifts to correcting health issues that can contribute to chronic pain. You may begin doing exercises and stretches to help accelerate your healing.

During the correction / restorative phase of your care, you will not have to receive chiropractic adjustments as often as you did during the first phase of care and, depending on your particular circumstances, you may begin doing exercises and stretches either at the center or at home to help accelerate your healing.

Do not be discouraged if you have mild flare-ups in your symptoms on occasion. This is normal. Flare-ups are bound to occur during this phase because your body has not fully healed. Depending on the severity of your injury or condition and how long you have been suffering from it, this phase of your care may last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years.

PHASE 3: WELLNESS CARE

MAINTENANCE IS KEY
Once your body has fully healed, wellness care focuses on preventing injury by keeping muscle and other tissue in optimal condition. This may include activities such as strengthening and stretching exercises along with dietary, nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.

When you make a commitment to your health as a part of your lifestyle, you avoid many of the aches and pains that so many people suffer through, your joints will last longer and you will be able to engage in more of the activities you love.

All Star Health Services can help you alleviate pain as early as your first session. Call us today at 844-844-4755 to discuss with our board-certified medical providers and chiropractors the different phases of relief. We are open on Mondays to Thursday at 7:30-6:30pm. Walk-ins are welcome.
